The CSUN Explorers program is an inclusive, postsecondary, two-year program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program aims to increase the independence, work, and life skills of its participants by providing them with a university experience alongside their peers.

Program Description

CSUN Explorers is a 2-year program designed for individuals between the ages of 18-28 who are identified with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The program includes:

• Enrollment at CSUN through Extended Learning
• Participation in two classes each semester with CSUN undergraduate students
• Opportunities to participate in clubs and other activities on campus
• Assignment of a Peer Mentor in each academic course and a Best Buddy in each club
• Internships on campus or in the community during the second year of the program

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CSUN Explorers program, applicants must:

• Have an identified intellectual/developmental disability
• Be between the ages of 18-28
• Demonstrate strong motivation to fully embrace the university experience
• Have received, or will be receiving, a certificate of completion or equivalent from a high school program
• Exhibit acceptable social behavior and the ability to get along with peers, follow rules, and accept supervision
• Be willing to participate in all hours of instruction and social activities
• Be free of communicable diseases and have up-to-date immunizations

• Be able to participate in a personal interview
• Provide current assessments from school, regional center, and/or current program attending
• Demonstrate a strong desire to complete the program
